3 Hidden Gems in Malang You Do Not Want to Miss!

In this post, I will show you a list of three must-visit off-track destinations around Malang. Since there are a lot of newcomers from outside of this city, I bet that they must not know their way around Malang and all of the wonderful yet secluded places that they need to visit! These three locations is  perfect for those who are looking for a short escape from the crowded city of Ngalam (Malang).

1. The Seven Springs Waterfall (Sumber Pitu)

Off-the-beaten-track in in the southern part of Malang, hidden amongst the vast area of Pujon, lies these seven breathtaking gems. This is the perfect place for local comers or foreigners to come and enjoy the beauty of mother nature. Sumber Pitu, which is Javanese for Seven Waterfalls, is located in Pujon, which is about one and a half hour away from the center of Malang. This local attraction has not yet been established by many because of its unpaved roads. However, it does not take away the beauty of this unseen spot. By any means, if you're up for the challenge, you should definitely get yourself there!

Things to keep in mind:
Sumber Pitu is open 24/7 (but you wouldn't want to go there at night), and the entrance ticket for Sumber Pitu is 10.000 rupiah for each person and an extra 2.000 rupiah for parking. Unfortunately, you might not find a lot of warung (food places) there, because not a lot people go there or even if they do, they stop half-way and end the trip there. So if you're hungry after your enduring journey, it is better to find food near Pujon, outside of Sumber Pitu. To get there you should ride a motorcycle because there isn't quite a path for cars.

2. Gatra Beach (Pantai Gatra)

Gatra Beach is the perfect place to spend your next holiday. Blessed by nature's bounty this beach gleams beautifully with its white sand, secluded shoreline, captivating sunsets and mishmash of action-loaded adventures. From Malang, it takes about two hours to get there and you can easily find it on the map, its in south Malang in Sitiarjo. The only challenge in getting there is that its a lengthy journey and you might need to take in-between breaks along the way to regain your energy. The road to Gatra is paved and both cars and motorcycle can get there. However, a few hundred meters before arriving there you might encounter a lot of pebbles on the path to get to the parking lot.

Things to keep in mind:
If you plan on going to Gatra Beach, you need to keep track of the amount of plastics or anything disposable that you bring into the beach. At the entrance the guard will count how many plastics you bring and they will write it down on a piece of paper that you will have to keep for proof when you leave from the beach. Try not to bring a lot, so that you don't leave any trash behind, because if you do, you will be fined. To get in, it cost 10.000 rupiah per person and the parking is 2.000 rupiah for a motorcyle and 5.000 rupiah for a car (this may vary). It's open 24 hours, because a lot of people camp there during the holidays. If you want to spend more time with your friends, you should definitely try camping there!

3. Jago Temple (Candi Jago/Jajaghu)

Located in Tumpang in the Malang Regency,  the name temple Jago actually originated from the word "Jajaghu", which was discovered during the Singhasari Kingdom in the 13th century. The term Jajaghu means 'majesty', and it is used to refer to a holy place. This temple used to be a sacred place for Tatrayana Buddhists. The magnificent and well-constructed temple amazes people and has a story to be told. The statue is an embodiment of the fourth king Singhasari named Raja Wisnuwarddhana. You do not want to miss out on this historical goodie! If you are interested in Javanese history, this is one destination that you need to visit. There are a lot of interesting stories from the local people that explains what had happened to the temple... and if you want to know more, be sure to go there.

Things to keep in mind:
The temple opens from 9AM-5PM and it is FREE! It is pretty instagrammable and people of all ages can visit. Please be respectful while you are there, do not do anything that may disappoint the local community.
